William Martin Joel's Music Style
Billy Joel repeatedly shows his affection for hooks similarly used by that of the popular band, the Beatles. His music also reflects a love for Broadway melodies, orchestral music, and rock 'n' roll. This unusual and unique combination made him one of the biggest stars of the 70's and 80's. Joel began his music career with several rock and metal bands who released albums that all failed epically. Through these failures in his early career, Joel was able to find his own style and sound as a solo artist. He is most famous for his rock 'n' roll songs and ballads. Below is a music video of one of Joel's most well known compositions that embodies a little bit of his sound and style.

During his early years, Joel was lead vocalist in a number of rock bands. Most notable of these is his hard rock duo Attila. The group was unique in that it incorporated the use of organ with instruments typically found in a rock group at the time. Attila was signed by Epic label and released a self-titled album in 1970 that is often regarded as one of the worst recorded albums in history. The consistently bad reviews of the album put Joel in a depression, involving a failed suicide attempt with the consumption of furniture polish.

"Attila undoubtedly is the worst album released in rock 'n' roll -- hell, the history of recorded music itself." |
